Computers and tech have forever changed the lives of youth,
teens and young adults. Truly we are living in a digital era and
youth and teens are becoming digital influencers.
Each generation of youth, teens and young adults are the
digital natives presented in media and news:
Digital Natives ages 12 to 24 spend 4.5 hours a day viewing
screen media (TV, Internet, Internet video, mobile video),
excluding games that even have the ability to link to online
content  PBS  2010

These digital natives are connected in a way never imagined
before and beyond the original range of the Internets design.
There is a growing concern there should be a balance of
consumers of tech and  producers of tech when discussing
youth. Children and youth need to learn the value of a digital
global perspective of the world, as I have  stated in blogs and
PodCasts. Children are not the future consumers they are the
now consumers and the now and future influencers.

They influence the buying of their parents and family members
when it comes to digital devices, Apps and accessories. Kids are
telling parents what to buy, why they should buy it and how to
use it. Then change the dynamics of tech to meet their needs.
Teaching each generation that our world is influenced by
thought leaders, digital visionaries, dreamers and seekers of
knowledge is important to direct their thinking in productive ways.

There is the danger of false doctrine, false information and
radicalism in many areas on the Internet. Parents must be able
to teach, model and investigate the accuracy and truth of content
their children consume.

The binary codes of programming languages that computers use
is a language that needs to be understood to provide clarity on
how they (computers) work and why computers do what
they do.

Kids and youth being the digital natives, innovators of today
and the future need conferences like WordCamp and KidsCamp
to direct their engagement and development.

WordCamp and KidsCamp build a foundation of respect and
awareness for the Internet beyond gaming and social butterflying.
The fastest growing nations for KidsCamp and YouthCamp
conferences are on the continents of Africa and Central America.
WordCamp conferences in Central America in 2019 are increasing
with WordCamp Nicaragua and Costa Rica of Central America,
they both have a KidsCamp in development.

Even in Calgary, Canada with WordCamp YYC has an engaging
and fun KidsCamp. Africa will have KidsCamp Harare, KidsCamp
Lagos, KidsCamp Entebbe and WordCamp PortHarcourt and
others.

Parents need to take advantage of these opportunities to encourage
their children to attend events and networking opportunities. Exposure
to critical and higher order thinking learning that is happening.
Youth and teens future career choices are influenced to help
develop the tech visionaries that each nation will need to grow their
economies in new and diverse directions.

Cross cultural and cross curricular learning encourages
applied cognitive tools during the learning in the
KidsCamp and Youth Camp environment.

Cross curricular processes to learning, making a transition
in math, writing, reading, comprehension when applied to
STEAM helps to show that all learning is relevant, connected
and valuable.

This is not the “you have to learn,” demands of parents there
is the guided learning of “why you should learn,” and “the
benefits to your life” guidance.
Youth, teens and young adults need learning that is individual
and in a team learning process as the teachers are the
facilitators of learning in an environment of discovery
and creativity. Kids and Youth Camp Conferences are the
growing and engaging ways to move.

STEAM – STREAM -CSTREAM
Hands-on learning that is projected based: students are
provided a project to accomplish and the process is explained
and they are let loose to explore the project to completion and
provided learning avenues to discover and explore.
Kids and youth are engaged in the learning process aided to
build critical and higher order thinking in a collaborative
environment with a goal that is measurable upon completion.
Hand-on learning is transformative and changes the learning
paradigm even for autistic children.

A stipulation, build relationships and build their
interests and how it can be applied to their growth. In Kids
and Youth Camp Conferences there should be trust, passion,
engagement and connections. Many times these cannot be
created in structured settings like schools, so WordCamp
conferences are unique and needed.

STEAM encourages learning scaffolding, problem solving,
sequencing, pattering, and critical along with higher order
thinking skills. Youth, teens and young adult may not know
when applied to building, designing, the Arts, discovery and
innovation, it provides a new avenue for learning and how
to apply that leaning for relevancy. Artists like Aida Correa
understand the value for these connections and why
the Arts are important. Guiding new areas of thinking,
rationalization, creativity and even building discipline.

Integration of core subject areas, creating a STEAM lesson
integrates Science, Technology Engineering, Arts and Math
as a 30 year professional educator teaching Physical Education
and Technology (Engineering) creativity and innovation go
hand in hand. Kids want to build, break, design, construct
and get messy from time to time. Web development builds
reading, comprehension and literacy skills. Behaviors do
change when youth, teens and young adult learn that
anyone globally will be able to read their content to they
put their best foot-forwards in writing and posting content.

Collaborative planning with business and industry students
are encouraged to take ownership for their learning, not just
to meet learning standards in schools, there is the freedom
of expression and sharing their passions in areas they can
learn about online not just in a classroom or school setting.

In Kids and Youth Camp Conferences they become the teachers
and parents become the students and parents are the support
mechanism during the Kids and Youth camp process.

What is learned in the traditional classrooms are applied in
hands-on lessons to revel that all learning is connected and
relevant to building ideas for careers that are now, new and
exploratory and ones that have not been created yet.

The engagement of individual learning and the connectivity
of collaborative learning are powerful tools especially for
children of color and culture. This provides an avenue to
show them that their “being” is important and they can both
individually and collectively make a difference in the world
around them.

Youth, teens and young adult in Africa and Canada are
expecting their participation in WordCamp conferences and
if they are not invited are protesting along with their parents.
The ability for WordCamp to expand and grow is dependent
on the support, encouragement and advocacy for Kids and
Youth Camps. The United States of America with all its
resources still cannot dominate the world with tech able
people, globally WordCamp conferences express
collaboration, connections and the integration of STEAM.

STEAM educators like William Jackson and Aida Correa
also show that Representation Matters because of their
diverse cultural backgrounds. Children of color and culture
need to see people of color and culture teaching them,
mentoring and guiding their growth.

Developing STEAM Initiatives and Integrating with Web Development.
The rapid growth of WordCamp conferences and the integration of
Kids Camp conferences being made available for youth, teens and
young adults of color need to be involved in new areas.
Educators like William Jackson and Aida Correa are
developing independent curriculum’s that are fun,
engaged, exciting and inclusive to the needs of
children of color. They (both are people of color)
understand that children of color need to see
representation that looks like them, allows for growth
and awareness in technology careers.

The implementation of STEAM, STEM, STREAM and CSTREAM
engagement allows for the building of critical and higher
order thinking that children of color have naturally,
but do not understand how to apply and build on their brilliance.
STEM camps, STEAM camps and Kids Camp are happening across
the nation and globally. Kids, youth, teens and young adults
are demanding to be included in the opportunities that WordCamp
conferences present. Kids Camp conferences are not only happening
in the United States, they are in San Jose, Costa Rica and
Nicaragua in Central America. William and Aida have assisted with
the Kids Camp in 2018 and with the Kids Camp in Calgary, Alberta
Canada as well in 2018.

Their participation is expected in 2019 and beyond to help
bring diversity in learning, engagement, fun and teaching skills
that are required in business, commerce and global enterprises.
Bursting at the doors kids are wanting to learn to code, and
develop web sites. Kids want to learn how to be entrepreneurs
and business owners.

Kids love technology and what the potential is for new business
ideas not just playing sports and entertainment. The future of
tech is in the youth, teens and young adults that are learning
in schools that have programs where learning can gain high salary
careers, in order to “qualify” there needs to be the right
education and mentor-ships.

Education is not the only option, networking, collaboration,
partnerships are valuable. Learning skills that are part of the
business process and learning the language(s) to talk the talk
and walk the walk.
Children of color must be able to engage in conferences
where their minds are broadened, their skills are
improved and sharpened and their fear of what is new is overcome.
Exposure is valuable and representation is key to motivating
beyond their present positions in life. Parents of color must
allow their children to participate in conferences to build
skills for future employment chances and changes.
Sports and entertainment come with inherent risks, but education
is only risky when it is discounted, rejected and laughed at.
The color of skin at a Kids Camp conference does not matter
because the instructors are of color and represent the kids
there.

William Jackson (African American) and Aida Correa
(Latina – Puerto Rican) create an environment of innovation,
creativity and discovery. All that is required is excitement,
a love for learning and creativity by the kids.
Children of color need to learn how to network, collaborate,
cooperate and work with the diversity the world has to offer.
Tech provides building a world of discovery and innovation,
and working together to accomplish goals and building future
dreams in careers, business and as entrepreneurs.

Children are learning about WordPress development,
web design, coding, java script, Podcasting, Vblogging,
Microblogging and other related skills. Kids will walk
away from Kids Camp with their very own WordPress.com
website. How cool is that!!!
Parents must prepare their children to move beyond manual
labor jobs and into new levels of thought leadership career
paths that create leadership opportunities, management
opportunities, financial stability and the opportunity
to travel the world.

One of the challenges for many children of color is that
too many do not get out of their neighborhoods to
explore the world around them. They seem to be stuck with
no exposure to the future and this creates “dream deserts”
where children of color don’t dream.
Kids Camps provide a vision and purpose for dreams. The
excitement of new thinking, fantastic dreams of growth
and change. The dopeness of the future as a
leader, creator and innovator.

The scariest thing for children is to state they have no
dreams, no aspirations and no goals beyond just living and
surviving. This must never be allowed to happen again !!!
Technology is helping humans to solve many of life’s
challenges. Children of color need to be part of the
solutions to solve human challenges, threats, complex
environmental changes and create generational growth.
Embracing intellectualism, being a thought leader, gifted,
talented, creative and innovative should be celebrated as a
child of color and culture.

Start by attending WordCamp and Kids Camp conferences and
other areas involving STEM and STEAM, the future is bright!!

Educational Philosophy:
Learning requires the engagement of a person’s total senses,
from direct interaction with the environment, listening, watching,
and receiving a blessing of knowledge that comes directly from
the source of interacting with those who have more seasoned wisdom.

Philosophy of Teaching:
I believe that all people no matter cultural background or gender have
the capability to learn, mature and grow cognitively and socially;
My goal is to prepare my students for the working environment by
teaching them how to be creative and productive with the use of
technology, using technology tools ethically.  There is a need for
today’s students to be guided in the direction that best suits their
individual learning styles. Learning never stops and those seeking
education must be taught that their learning is continuous
throughout their lives regardless of age.

Literary Submissions Online and Traditional:
Submissions addressing education, technology, diversity and parental
relationships. These are just a few and they have changed with
audience and platform.

Submissions to local and state wide newspapers and magazines.
