Students Can Use AI to Improve Reading and Comprehension

Students Can Use AI to Improve Reading and Comprehension
by Chancellor and Minister William Jackson

Across Jacksonville, students are growing up in a digital world
where AI Artificial Intelligence and 4IR can become a powerful
learning partner. When used responsibly, AI tools can help
elementary students strengthen reading skills, improve
comprehension, and build confidence as developing learners.

AI powered reading platforms can personalize learning by
matching books and passages to a student’s reading level
and interests. This means students are not overwhelmed
or
bored; instead, they are challenged just enough to grow.

Many AI tools offer read aloud features, instant vocabulary
support, and guided questions that help students understand
what they read, not just pronounce the words. These supports
are especially helpful for emerging readers and multilingual
learners.

Parents gain an educational ally through AI. Families can use
AI to create short stories based on a child’s favorite topics
sports, space, animals, or local Jacksonville history. Turning
reading into interactive storytelling keeps children engaged
and curious. Some tools even help create simple songs or
rhymes from reading passages, making literacy fun and
memorable at home, in school and the community.

Most importantly, AI encourages shared learning, imagination,
innovation and creativity and a love for continued learning.
Parents and children can read together, ask questions, and
explore new ideas side by side. This strengthens both literacy
and family learning connection.

STEAM educator Jackson shares, “AI should not replace
reading it should amplify curiosity, creativity, and confidence
for our youngest learners.” When guided by educators and
parents, AI can inspire students
to become strong readers
today and lifelong learners tomorrow.
