Being a STEAM Educator is actually a fun career, the opportunities
to blend technology with low tech and high tech can be rewarding
and fun. The understanding that all students are not equal just
as all families are not equal. That equates to economics, value
of education and access to digital tools. Using what is already
available can build literacy, language development and comprehension.
Many students are reading below grade levels and the pressured to
get them “up to speed” can be frustrating and even create low
self-esteem and lower enthusiasm for learning.
Orthographic Awareness relates to the brains ability to recognize
words and letters. Instead of frustration lets do fun instead and
allowing the students to take ownership of their learning.
“Gamified Literacy,” I explore how integrating digital project-based
and hands-on learning into the classroom can significantly enhance
language development, fluency and visual discrimination. By utilizing
online versions of Hangman and Word Search in Cool Math Games,
students engage in non-traditional learning that reinforces phonics,
spelling patterns, and visual word recognition.
Using the programs to have “friendly” competitions, building personal
self-esteem and low impact boosting of self-awareness that students
are smart, intelligent, creative and imaginative. Interactive tools
still do foster orthographic awareness and strategic thinking, allowing
learners to internalize vocabulary through thematic challenges and
playful competition.
Emphasizing that such gamified strategies are particularly effective
for building student confidence and academic fluency in environments
with limited resources. Charter schools are faced with serving more
academically challenged students and may not have the resources of
the high priced, high impact software’s. The reality is that high cost
tools are only good as the understanding of the learner. If software
companies do not understand the economic, cultural and societal
environments of students then many districts may be wasting their
monies on software that is not even designed for lower levels
of comprehension.
Ultimately, students that do not consistently apply methods transform
routine vocabulary practice into a high-impact experience that
supports long-term memory and reading comprehension. Learning is
not just memorization it is how do our students apply what they are
learning to their vision of themselves and the world around them.

is an excellent resource spanning decades of tools, games, projects
and information that even gifted and lower academic students will enjoy.
Teaching over 3 decades it is not always the super high tech software
that wins students, sometimes it is the low tech and tried and true
resources that work best.
